Paradise Hill Trail

The Paradise Hill Trail invites visitors to discover a landscape deeply connected to agriculture and land use in earlier generations. Known for its rich and fertile soil, this area supported a wide variety of crops and livestock, making it an important space for cultivation and survival. As you walk along the trail, the surrounding hills and open land reflect a time when families relied on the land to grow fruits and vegetables and to raise animals such as cattle.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the area was dotted with what were known as slob hole wells. These were hand-dug wells created by people living in the hills or in places without direct access to water sources. They played an essential role in daily life, providing water for both household use and farming activities. Through guided storytelling, visitors gain insight into the resourcefulness and knowledge required to live and work in this environment.

The trail is also connected to the story of Mr. Rupert Warner, who owned one of the largest properties on the French side in this area. He purchased his land at the age of 14 and spent years working tirelessly to develop it. He burned coal, cleared pasture, and cultivated crops including pineapples, sweet potatoes, carrots, and eggplants, while also raising livestock. His dedication shaped the land into a productive and valuable property. Later, when his son returned from abroad with the intention of selling the land due to its high value, Mr. Rupert was deeply disappointed, having invested so much of his life into it. This story reflects the strong connection between land, labor, and legacy in the community.

The Paradise Hill Trail offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the hard work, resilience, and agricultural traditions that once defined life in Colombier, and the enduring relationship between people and the land they depended on.
