Dutch Wall Trail
The Dutch Wall Trail invites visitors to discover a site connected to Saint Martin’s colonial past and the movement of people across the island. Along the trail, you will encounter the remains of the historic “Dutch Wall,” a stone boundary that once marked the division between the Dutch and French territories. Surrounded by hills and natural vegetation, the landscape offers a quiet setting where traces of history remain visible in the land.

This area also holds stories of the hardworking women who traveled long distances to sell their goods. In the early hours of the morning, often between 3:00 and 4:00 a.m., women carrying baskets of produce and goods would arrive at the wall before beginning their journey toward communities such as South Reward, St. Peters, Scott Road, Zagers Gut, Cul-de-Sac, and Long Wall Road. Along the way, they would pause to rest, adjust the baskets they carried on their heads, and organize their goods before continuing toward Great Bay to sell to local residents. Through guided storytelling, visitors gain insight into these journeys of resilience, trade, and everyday life that once connected communities across the island. The Dutch Wall Trail offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the shared history and human movement that helped shape Saint Martin.
